It’s that time of year where everyone around you is starting to talk about vacations, hiking trails, and camping trips. Swimsuit season is here and, like most of us, the winter months may have taken their toll on you. It’s completely normal that your workout routine may have taken a little bit of a hit at the beginning of the year.
Maybe you’ve been so consumed with work and family priorities that–again, like so many of us–your own fitness and wellness was put on the back burner. Whether you’ve been going through a busy period, or if you’re relatively new to working out regularly, here are some steps to take to start connecting with your mind and body.
Start Slow
Two words: baby steps! Set reasonable goals for yourself. Even if you used to be a competitive runner, or if you’ve taken on big marathons in the past, if it’s been a while since you put on running shoes: you’re not going to get back to where you were overnight. That goes double for anyone who is starting from square one. The harder you push yourself at the gym, the more you could experience injuries or burn out.
Set Reasonable Fitness Goals
The most important aspect of working out is how it makes you feel. You want to engage in a workout routine that’s appropriate for your schedule and your lifestyle. The higher you set your expectations, the more likely that you’ll disappoint yourself. Set a schedule that you can meet; maybe you just need 20 minutes on a treadmill and 20 minutes of strength training, or any routine that you can execute regularly. Working with a licensed personal trainer helps you establish those goals, too.
Stick to It
Now that you’ve established realistic fitness goals: honor them. If you fall off your workout routine for a day or two, get back to it as soon as you can. It’s a given that some of us get worn out from a long day at work or a stressful afternoon of dealing with the kids. Staying on top of your workout routine will only help you manage that stress in the long run. Don’t give up!
Reward Yourself When You Hit Fitness Milestones
The truth is, as much as a personal trainer will motivate you, hold you accountable, and measure your progress: you know yourself better than anyone. When you do hit those fitness milestones, whether that means dropping an inch from your waist, losing a few pounds, or just feeling less stressed out and tired: give yourself a treat. That could be a nice meal at your favorite restaurant, a pair of new training shoes, or baseball tickets. Sometimes the best way to ensure you stick to a workout routine is to celebrate your successes along the way.
Ask for Help
Again: you know yourself better than anyone. You also know your own obstacles better than anyone. Do you need childcare support in order to maintain your gym schedule? Does the whole family need to get involved by eating healthier meals and doing more outdoor activities together? Would it help if a friend joined you while you do your workouts? Being honest with yourself about your own obstacles can be tough, but it’s also a crucial step towards living a healthier and more rewarding lifestyle.
